What’s their story...
Once upon a time... not-so long ago, in a land not-so far away (Nashville to be exact), four high school kids decided to make a record down in the basement at one of their homes. This basement-released CDR finds its way into several of the right hands (including the hands of Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore). Before they’ve even graduated from High School, they graduate with honors from the School of Rock, when their first DIY single becomes an immediate hit in the UK. A little bit of time passes, bringing a whirl-wind of national and international gigs, including CMJ and SXSW in the USA, and Glasto and Reading in the UK… and do they live happily ever-after? Hell yeah, they do! Their anticipated follow-up album “Not Rocket Science” comes out on May 8th. So, there you have it, boys and girls, this is the fairy tale of Be Your Own Pet…

Why I want to turn you onto it...
At first, I was hesitant to begin my band-of-the-week picks with a band who has a chick lead-singer. But, I quickly dismissed these silly little thoughts. Why? For a few reasons, actually. The number one reason being: NEVER listen to that little voice in the back of your head… she’s annoying and almost always wrong. Number two: Jemina Pearl Abegg is a bad-ass chick lead-singer. Enough said. (But, of course… I’ll say more… ) Not only is her strong voice so perfectly erratic, but her vigorous stage presence is a site to see. And number three: Be Your Own Pet is actually touring with the Arctic Monkeys, and they will be in our own back-yard – playing a show at Hard Rock in Orlando on May 20th. See… damn that voice in the back of my head.
